Sustainable mobility plans include bicycle measures as one of their key actions. However there are neither analytical tools to model their potential, nor scientific studies about the relationship between urban lay-out and bicycle trips. The problem focuses on the difficulties of the traditional modelling approach based on explanatory variables such as cost and time to explain cyclist choices. Bicycle’ users shape their choice according to psychosocial, cultural and institutional factors as well as the relationships with morphology and urban structure. The project has a unique opportunity in the recently approved cycling policy of Madrid (Plan Director de Movilidad Ciclista and public bicycle system called MyBici). The project would run in parallel with the implementation of most important projects of those Plans. It will provide a research opportunity to develop real-time measures of their impact on Madrid mobility and mode choice.

Therefore, the objectives of the project are the following:

  • To measure the change in modal split in Madrid through periodical traffic counts
  • To identify and measure key factors influencing mobility behaviour. This objective includes cultural, social, spatial, urban, economic, subjective (symbolic and affective) factors. For this goal there are two surveys: a panel survey and a general mode choice survey.
  • The main objective is to develop a new model for travel demand analysis capable to catch cycling trips.
  • To identify relationships among different factors and to select best mobility policies to implement a efficient strategy to increase bicycle use in urban areas.

The project has a multidisciplinary approach to cope the three aspects of the problem: modelling mobility behaviour, psychological aspects of travel choice and city characteristics that facilitate cycle use. Therefore the proposed methodology in a combination of Transport Economics, Urban Geography and Social Psychology methods and techniques. It is structures in 4 Work Packages:

A- Key factors for achieving a cycling city;

B- Behavioural change analysis;

C- Cycling demand Modelling; and

D- Conclusions - Designing transition strategies for promoting cycling in cities.

A set of new research findings are expected:

  • A definition of the structure of a new transport demand model that consider bicycle options in urban areas.
  • The identification of psychosocial factors influencing the use of bicycle in urban contexts.
  • New methodological developments to combine quantitative data (traffic counts, time and cost) with other of urban structure (accessibility, network density, reliability, etc.) and individual perception 2 of cost&benefits (safety, health, environmental friendly behaviour, etc.)
  • Definition of transport strategies to develop friendly cities for cyclists and pedestrians. The project will have a potential impact on the municipalities, consultants and academics working
  • in the implementation of urban projects. Then, in addition to the publication in journals and conferences, 2 dissemination conferences are planned along the project life.



The project aims at scientific and empirically analysis of the behaviour of cyclists in their decision to travel by bike, distinctively in a context of modal shift from other modes to cycling mode. Knowledge of this behaviour is the key to managing potential demands that need to be consolidated in those situations where the necessary data are very difficult to reach. For that reason, the project aims to incorporate the forecasting and the management of potential cycling demand into modal choice models of transportation, considering psychosocial, cultural and institutional factors as well as the relationships that happen with morphology and urban structure. The success of this work will ensure the effectiveness of policies promoting the use of this mode of transport in response to mobility and environmental problems suffered by many Spanish cities
